The application of magnetic nanomaterials for neuromodulation
Anouk Wolters
Maastricht University, the Netherlands
Abstract:
Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS) is a neurosurgical technique used to alleviate neurological disorders like Parkinson’s disease, but current methods face challenges such as wired implants and battery replacements. This study explores a wireless alternative using magnetomechanical DBS, where magnetic nanodiscs (MNDs) and weak magnetic fields activate mechanosensitive ion channels to induce neuronal excitation. The findings suggest a promising, minimally invasive neuromodulation approach. In a thinly connected line, I will present some of the projects I worked on—including developing artificial astrocytes, elucidating plant electrical signals using organic electronic devices, and ascertaining biocompatibility of to-be-implanted microbots.
