The simulation of quantum many body dynamics is a classically hard task and is being considered a strong candidate for quantum advantage. However, near-term quantum hardware is susceptible to errors prohibiting its applications to quantum simulation. This talk discusses two ways of bring-ing quantum simulation closer towards near-term applicability. I discuss algorithmic approaches that make use of classical computation power wherever possible, only using the comparably ex-pensive quantum resources in the most crucial step.

To this end, variational product formulas with classically efficient cost functions are derived, such that the quantum computer is completely separated from the optimization loop. This is achieved with an approximative error measure derived from a truncation of the Baker-Campbell-Hausdorff Hamiltonian using perturbation theory. Moreover, for translation invariant systems, an exact error measure can be classically computed on a small system and gives rise to optimal product formulas also for larger, classically intractable, systems.

I further present a new quantum algorithm to find the operator Schmidt decomposition of a given quantum circuit acting on a composite system. This tensor product decomposition unveils the classical representability and the entangling structure of the quantum operation in question and can be used to make classical predictions about the effective dynamics of local observables.
